Rehab Facility
The main responsibilities I had as an intern were hooking up patients to EKG monitors, taking blood pressures, assisting the patients with the exercise modalities, as well as assisting my preceptors with anything that they needed. I had the privilege of being able to build a relationship with a lot of the patients and I feel that they taught me so much more than I could have ever taught them.
Surgery
I also had the amazing opportunity to observe an open heart surgery. The procedure that was being performed was a CABG, or coronary artery bypass graft. This patient had to receive 4 grafts from a section of a vein that was removed from the inner thigh. The entire surgery from start to finish lasted about 6 hours, at which point my feet were basically numb! I have a whole new respect for all those who work in the medical field who are on their feet for so many hours at a time.
